BAY CITY, MI — A Monitor Township man police say drunkenly stumbled into a stranger’s house, only to wind up hospitalized after a fight with the homeowner, has been charged with a felony.

Larry D. King, 55, is charged with one count of first-degree home invasion. The charge is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

According to court records, Bay County Sheriff’s deputies at about 11:23 p.m. on Sunday, June 8, were dispatched to the house of 54-year-old Timothy J. Ballor in the 2100 block of Midland Road in Monitor Township. Arriving on scene, deputies found King inside Ballor’s living room, his face bloody and asking what they were doing in his house.

Ballor told the deputies he was grocery shopping and arrived home about 11:15 p.m., noticing a doorframe was newly damaged, court records show. Ballor walked inside, set his groceries down and turned on a light. At that point, he heard a man yell, “Hey (expletive) hole, get out of my house!”

Ballor walked to his living room and saw a shadow lunge at him, in an attempt to tackle him, he said. Ballor then punched the intruder numerous times and subdued him, pinning him to the ground as he called 911, court records show.

As Ballor was on the phone, the intruder asked him why he hit him, court records show.

King was transported to McLaren Bay Region hospital for treatment of his injuries. Interviewed at the hospital, King told deputies he went to a friend’s house, but could not provide the friend’s name or address. He denied breaking into the house or assaulting anyone, court records show.

King did tell police he consumed a pint of vodka earlier in the day, court records show.

Deputies found King’s dog walking around the Monitor Township neighborhood, a leash still attached to its collar. They also made contact with King’s sisters, who said their brother was diagnosed with dementia three years prior, but that he still lived alone.

King lives in the 2400 block of Midland Road, three blocks from Ballor’s residence, court record show.

Deputies also found King’s shoes in the driveway of a home in the 2200 block of Midland Road, as well as some blood. Deputies concluded King fell in the driveway and injured his head, causing him to bleed before entering Ballor’s house.

Bay County Chief District Judge Timothy J. Kelly on Friday, July 25, granted defense attorney Marcus Garske’s request to have King sent for an evaluation at the Center for Forensic Psychiatry in Ypsilanti, where staff will assess his criminal responsibility and competency.
